The Technical Process of Healing Currents

This week we focused on the technical side of Healing Currents, and Veronique gave us a walkthrough of how everything has been coming together behind the scenes. The very first mockup was super simple, but it helped us understand the basic flow of the system and what we needed to build next. Seeing that early version made it clear how the reflections would turn into fish and what parts still needed work.

From there, Veronique connected our Google Sheet so the system could pull reflections in real time, and set up mapping logic so longer reflections generate larger fish. We tested this with our mid-fidelity prototype and used the feedback from the prototype presentation to explore different ways the fish could appear and move across the screen.

One of the biggest improvements came after more conversations with the team. Instead of spawning the fish randomly, Veronique redesigned the motion system so fish swim in from either the left or right edge. This made the animations feel a lot more natural and tied to the idea of flowing water. She also integrated the media and audio assets so everything works together once the visuals are layered in.

Once the technical base was stable, we moved into the final iteration. This is where the technical and visual sides started merging. Miranda has been creating the suckerfish animations and movement frames. As well as working on the gradients and water textures in the background. Once everyone brought their parts together they were able to make the final projection come to life!

We’re not sharing the full final projection just yet, but this small sneak peek shows where things are heading. As we finish up the final projection you can learn more on our socials and if we are selected you can see the full installation at Lights on Stratford!
